An Artist’s top tips for visiting an Art Fair.
The excitement is building for your visit to an Art Fair but with such a feast for your eyes and so much choice it can very quickly become overwhelming. As an exhibiting artist at Art Fairs I have connected with many visitors and collectors. Here are the top 5 comments I have heard and how I want to respond!
There is so much art - its very overwhelming!
Before visiting the fair - visit the fair’s website. Look at the list of exhibitors and the floor plan and prioritise those that peak your interest. Familiarise yourself with the layout of the fair to ensure you don’t miss any of your favourites.
I want to buy some art for my home but I don’t know where to start?
If you are looking for a special piece have a think before you visit for what you are looking for. You can read of my guide Anyone can be an Art Collector. Think about budget, is there a space you have in mind and what is your personal style.
There are too many amazing artworks to choose from, how will I decide?
Buy what you love! When walking around the fair make a shortlist of your favourites. Take a photo and note the artists stand number and name. When you are ready take some time out to decide. i like the comparison technique - Look at two artworks and keep the one you like the most. Then look at the favourite you just picked and compare to the next one on the list. Keep the favourite out of those two and so on until you are left with one. Or if you see an artwork that takes your breath away and it ticks all the boxes just buy it. You will never regret buying an artwork you love - but you might regret waiting and missing out.
How did they do that?
Art is all about creating connections and a conversation and Art Fairs present the perfect opportunity for artist and collector to connect. If you are drawn to an artists style or are curious about their process or technique - be brave and ask them about it. One thing artists love to talk about is art!
I’m just looking thanks…
