Anyone can be an Art Collector… but how?
Collecting Art used to be a hobby of the rich and famous. But there has been an explosion of more affordable art with many more ways to collect so now we all have the opportunity to start our Art Collecting Journey.
In the past the rich and famous would engage an Art Buyer. They would look at the technique of the artist, cultural and historical significance, investment value and make a recommendation. They would have a relationship with the gallery that often the general public didn’t have access to. There are some fabulous art buyers around so I am happy to recommend this option. But there has been an explosion of art with many more ways to collect so now we all have the opportunity to start our Art Collecting Journey ourselves. But with so much choice where do you begin?
Here is my How to Guide to becoming an Art Collector. .
Define your style.
As an artist I am always being told to define my style but what people are really saying is “Know yourself”. As an Art Collector you need to know yourself to know what you might like. Think about your personality, the clothes you wear, what colours you surround yourself with. Are you colourfull and loud, or more traditional and prefer the style of the old masters. Do you like neutrals and calm, or are you bold, expressive and adventurous. This is give you are starting point to find art you love.
Curate a Collection of your favourite art.
When looking online, or pinterest or on Instagram - Save a collection of your favourite artworks.. Follow the artist on socials and join their mailing list if they have one or their galleries mailing list. Then you can stay up to date with their latest releases or exhibitions and be ready when you see something you love. You will also start to see a trend in the sort of artwork you like and gain a better understanding of your style.
Know where to find art.
You can find art in a Regular Gallery but where else can you buy Art?
Direct from the Artist - Most artists have a Website or Insta. If you see something you like slide into their DM’s or purchase direct from their website. It builds a stronger connection with the artist and results in more of the sale price going directly to the artist instead of on a Gallery commission.
Online Galleries - Online Galleries, including Bluethumb and Art Lovers Australia, are a great way to see a variety of artists in the one place from the comfort of your home.
Art Fairs - Art Fairs such as The Other Art Fair or The Affordable Art Fair are a great opportunity to see a lot of artists in the one location and see the art in real life whilst being able to meet the artist.. Art always has more impact when you can see the scale, texture and colours and when you can build a connection with the artist. .
Interiors Stores and Boutique Galleries - There are many retail interiors stores like Jumbled, Fenton and Fenton and Greenhouse Interiors that support and represent emerging artists. Some Boutique Galleries that also sell online are Art to Art in Melbourne, Aspire Gallery in Brisbane.
Local Art Shows and Art Prizes - There are often art shows and prizes supported by local council, art societies, schools and clubs in your local area.
Know where the artwork will live and your budget.
Your budget will determine if you are looking for an emerging artist, mid-level or an established art. Knowing where it will live will help define the size, subject matter and colour scheme for the artwork you are looking for.
Buy what you love.
Whilst collecting art is an investment decision, buying art you love is priceless! Surround yourself with Art that brings you joy and that will have a ripple effect bringing joy to everyone.
